(Broomfield, CO) A Precious Child, a local nonprofit that provides basic essentials to disadvantaged and displaced children in Colorado, teamed up with the Broomfield Police Department on Saturday, July 30, 2016 to collect backpacks and school supplies for children in need at the Walmart located at 4651 West 121st Avenue in Broomfield, Colorado. Through the drive, A Precious Child collected $1,293 in cash contributions as well as hundreds of backpacks and school supplies to help children, who are living in poverty and facing other difficult circumstances, return to school prepared and ready to learn.
A Precious Child distributes the backpacks to children through their local agency partners. In 2015, the Fill A Backpack program provided 8,474 backpacks to children. This year, A Precious Child has received over 11,000 requests for backpacks.
“Academic success is essential to a bright future for the 190,000 children in Colorado who are living in poverty,” said Carina Martin, CEO & Founder of A Precious Child. “By partnering with A Precious Child’s Fill A Backpack program, the Broomfield Police Department is making a difference for so many students in need, and for that we are so grateful.”
The Broomfield Police Department was in full force throughout the day talking with community members about the program and collecting donations. A special appearance was made by furry heroes from the Canine Unit. The Legacy High School Poms Team also volunteered their time.
“Activities like this remind us how lucky we are to have such caring men and women in uniform supporting our community,” added Martin. “The Broomfield Police Department has been an instrumental supporter of A Precious Child since its inception in 2008. Not only do they help with our Fill A Backpack program, they also support our work through the Police vs Fire Bowling Tournament each March that helps raise funds for our mission.”
In addition to supporting children through the Fill A Backpack program, A Precious Child provides basic essentials and educational advocacy to thousands of Colorado children in need through eleven other programs all focused on removing barriers to a child’s education. All clients served at A Precious Child are referred through Agency Partners, such as health and human service departments, local schools and homeless shelters, who identify the need for assistance. If you were unable to participate in this year’s Fill A Backpack and would like to get involved with any of A Precious Child’s current or upcoming programs please visit APreciousChild.org.
