This column tells the stories of the people whose faces appear on “A Colorado Panorama: A People’s History,” a two-block-long tile mural on the southeast side of the Colorado Convention Center. Inspired by Howard Zinn’s groundbreaking book, “A People’s History of the United States,” the mural was created by artist Barbara Jo Revelle in 1989 to celebrate those who rarely make it into the history books, but who have nonetheless had a profound impact on the history of our state. This will be the final posting in this series. The author, Don Morreale, wishes to thank all of his faithful readers for your comments, critiques, corrections, and Kudos.

Barbara Jo Revelle: Artist, Teacher, Creator of the Colorado Panorama mural.  b. 1946

Barbara Jo Revelle

Barbara Jo Revelle dropped out of school and came to Colorado in 1964 to ski and eventually to earn a degree in English Literature at CU Boulder.  She went on to earn an MFA in Film and Photography at CU where she later served as Director of the University’s Photography and Electronic Media Program.  In a career spanning over forty years, she taught at eleven universities, and is currently Professor Emeritus at the School of Art and Art History at University of Florida, Gainesville.  Her work has been exhibited internationally in over 150 group and solo shows, and is represented in 41 collections worldwide.  In addition to A Colorado Panorama, Revelle has created three other ceramic tile murals – one on a clock tower in Longmont, another on the Public Library in Lafayette, and a third on the courthouse in Fort Myers, Florida.  These days she spends her summers in Provincetown, Massachusetts, where she competes in long-distance swimming contests to help raise money for a charity called SWIM-4-LIFE.

Don Morreale

A proud resident of the Centennial State since the age of 13, Don Morreale settled with his family in Colorado Springs in 1961 after a childhood spent on military bases in Germany, Japan, Taiwan, and across the USA.  He earned his undergraduate degree in Comparative Religions from the University of Denver in 1972, and a Master’s in Creative Writing from Denver University College in 2010.  Initially he made his living in real estate, renovating derelict properties in Denver’s City Park West.  His first book, Buddhist America, came out in 1988, after which he turned to writing full time.  He is now the published author of nine books and well over 100 magazine and newspaper articles.  In recent years, he’s been teaching creative writing and public speaking at universities in Nepal and China.  A practitioner of mindfulness meditation, he has taught meditation in Denver and on cruise ships worldwide.  He lives with his wife Nancy in Denver, which has been his home for more than fifty years.
