A Colorado Panorama: Rabbi William Friedman and Theresa Garcia

This column tells the stories of the people whose faces appear on “A Colorado Panorama: A People’s History,” a two-block-long tile mural on the southeast side of the Colorado Convention Center. Inspired by Howard Zinn’s groundbreaking book, “A People’s History of the United States,” the mural was created by artist Barbara Jo Revelle in 1989 to celebrate those who rarely make it into the history books, but who have nonetheless had a profound impact on the history of our state. This week we’re featuring profiles of Rabbi William Friedman and Theresa Garcia.

After his graduation from Hebrew Union College in 1889, Rabbi William Friedman moved to Denver to become Spiritual Director of Temple Emmanuel, with a congregation of only fifty members. Under his leadership, the membership grew to over 550, making it one of the largest and most influential Jewish congregations west of the Mississippi. To promote mutual understanding among Denver’s Christians and Jews, Rabbi Friedman would often trade pulpits with local Christian ministers. He is best known, however, as the co-founder of National Jewish Hospital for Consumptive Relief, the first U.S. institution to offer free treatment for tuberculosis on a non-sectarian basis. Among his many other distinctions, Rabbi Friedman served as President of the State Board of Charities and Corrections, Vice-President of the Board of Denver Library Commissioners, and as a member of the Council of Advisors to the Governor of Colorado. In 1906, the University of Colorado recognized him with an honorary law degree. A building at National Jewish Hospital is named after him.

Theresa Garcia grew up on a ranch in the San Luis Valley near the town of Gardner. One of thirteen children, she received no schooling, but instead spent her childhood helping her father plant and harvest his fields of bush beans, seeds, and alfalfa. At age twenty she married Abel Merina and spent two years helping him construct an adobe house. He died in 1919, leaving her to raise their three children on her own. She married a second time and had five more children, birthing them on the floor of her house without assistance from a mid-wife or neighbor. After the death of her second husband, Candido Garcia, she spent seven years running the ranch on her own. One of her sons finally convinced her to sell the property and move to Gardner, where she worked as a cook for the local priest. She eventually joined her son Francisco in Pueblo where she cooked and kept house for a group of priests.
