Realtor Darrin Goebel, of RE/MAX Northwest, lists his top tips on how to make a dream home a reality.

“First and foremost, you have to have a solid vision of what your dream house will look like before even contracting with a builder or architect, as it is your dream home, not the builder or architect’s,” said Darrin. “You don’t want to waste your time or that of the team with a vague idea.”

To accomplish this, Darrin suggests asking yourself pertinent questions, such as how big the home should be, how many bedrooms and bathrooms you want, what the style should be, etc. If you have problems with this, there are helpful websites for designing the home yourself, including eplans.com, where you can customize your building plans by selecting the number of bedrooms and bathrooms you want as well as the style of the home and approximate square footage you desire. Additionally, this site will generate a plethora of plans to meet your specifications.

“The next step, naturally, is to hire the right team of professionals to make your dream home a reality,” said Darrin. “Employ a licensed architect who specializes in custom home design and contract with a reputable builder. Don’t be shy about asking to look at their portfolios or get referrals.”

An architect’s job is to take you from the design concept through the building process. Darrin suggests finding an architect that will not only help you create a final design, but will also develop a budget, produce working drawings and specifications and provide ongoing job supervision once construction commences. If this is not economically feasible, you can hire an architect to perform only specific phases of your dream home project, and allow the builder to supervise construction.

“If you want to forego the architect altogether, contract with a design/build firm, which combine design and building services, essentially making them a one-stop shop,” said Darrin. “These firms will have an in-house architect or designer who will work closely with you to ensure your dream home becomes a reality.”

A dream home that Darrin and RE/MAX Northwest are making a reality is a “Vantaris” model listed at $949,900. The new construction Mediterranean masterpiece consists of approximately 4,700 beautifully finished square feet, high-end finishes, a sumptuous main floor master suite, SS appliances and ornate ceiling treatments, all situated on a 1.38-acre home site with commanding city and mountain views.
